New vs. Old Pickups

Postby jordankersten on Fri Jul 16, 2010 7:37 pm

I need to replace the upper pickup on my D6. Has anyone had experience with the new humbucker pickups? How do they sound compared to the originals? I am debating whether to get the new humbuckers or pay quite a bit more for a NOS original single coil from Europe. I know the description says they are designed to sound like the originals but I keep thinking about how different single coils and humbuckers sound on a guitar. Any advice?

I can't say myself as I've yet to try the new clavinet.com pickups however one thing that must be mentioned is that whilst you might want to buy NOS, remember that the plastic will be comparatively more brittle than it's new counterpart (due to it's age and possible storage conditions). It's upto you whether it's worth paying the premium for the NOS' sound and risk the possibility of that breaking in the future, compared to the longevity of newly manufactured plastic and hum reducing aspects of the newer counterpart.

Just a thought :-)
