200 amplifier SMOKE

Postby mcsugarfree on Thu Feb 24, 2011 8:32 pm

i'm working on my first wurli. i got it from the junk store and opened it up to discover that TR 10 was missing. i replaced the missing power cord with an IEC jack and cord and replaced TR-10 with a TIP42b that appears to be equivalent to MJE2011(i have since read lots of posts here about replacement transistors...).

now. when i turn it on, the light comes on and the speakers hum quite loudly (but the keys don't make any amplified sound when struck) and after about 6 seconds the big black resistor directly in front of TR 10 (I believe it is R 9) STARTS SMOKING _a lot_.

where should i start?
